Never stick a pin into anything..causes damage esp. in amber..I have seen several nice pieces of amber with a hole (usually in the center).
I have done hours and hours of research & handling cameos & in my opinion that is the best way to gain experience of what is vintage, carved, museum quality, etc. There is actually no short cuts to learning except maybe a book from the library might help you where you can see what is valuable and what to look for. I do love to read & that has helped me..have over 50 books in my personal library on jewelry.
I do look at my competitors sites and how they display their items..this has given me many new ideas..always learning too.
Yes, there used to be a tight knit group of joolies..I came to think of a lot ot them as friends as you heard from them everyday with their daily comings and goings...it is so sad that it broke up.
I am on RL,TACE & ESTY...I do spend sometime during each and every day working on them.
Please don't needle jewelry any more and get yourself or loan from the library a few books on jewelry...I bet you'll be glad you did. Amazon does have used books.

Shelly, sorry RL charges $20 a mth just for advertising, then they charge regardless 39cents to start off for each new item & maintenance each month something like .39 (I get a discount) for each item that is already in your shop & you need something like 80-100 items to be noticed.....like what I know is a fact ....you need to spend $ to get $. Doesn't ebay give free ads sometimes? Do you have a store & what is your ebay name by the way?

I can live with..they do get you the customers..you do pay every month regardless if you have a sale or not, but have very few months where there were no sales. The customers for the most part are good to deal with. Only sell on RL the best of what I have & describe fully..don't want returns &

Winter is still around sorry to say as we had another couple of inches this morning..snarling up traffic & lots of accidents here in No. VA. Still doing my taxes, but ahead so far. I go into the discussion boards everyday & find them interesting. Also the FlyLady site sends me a few emails everday so it is drummed into my head about doing 15 minutes of clean up everyday (where it is overwhelmiing). Books can get into piles, they are like bunnies multiplying by the tens. I did go thru a few & kept what I know what I would read soon. Already the piles have doubled. Getting ready for the big storm here. Shelly..have you gotten the dailes on the Fly Lady sight? These can be up to about 8 or so a day, but I read at least half & they do give you good ideas to help you purge & get things done everyday tasks too. As far as doing up my taxes I have made a good start by putting everything I need into one file & will do a little every few days..that is the only way I can take this awful chore made into increments & I know that it is getting done a little at a time...better then rushing around at the last final days.
I do like those 2 links..you do learn a lot from what other's post there...be back in a few days...Loveoldstuff-Lil

Slow mth of Jan for me at the Red Rd site, but hanging in there regardless. Got a lot to do for the beginning of the month & I ease down a bit towards the middle as far as listing goes at the Red Rd site. Seems I am sorting each night while I watch t.v. for I have a big cabinet in a antique shop here in town, plus the other sites on the web that I have need a turnover of new items. Always something to do when you are a dealer.
Finally warming up here in VA at 41.
Of course, I just now got myself a heavier quilted coat for everyday.
Hope everyone has a great week-end. I might be going to a big show tomorrow, but I am not needing any inventory..just looooooking.

Shelly....I have the same problem, but I am trying to overcome with a 15 minute timer & Flylady website reminders (everyday). You will be surprised what you can do in 15 min intervals..even 1x a day. Google up Flylady if you want to..now they do sell their own products, but with each is a helpful idea to carry out to keep you on a schedule with the thought of not making you a perfectionist that it seems we probably are....a BIT is better then NONE done! Shelly, DO YOUR RESEARCH...CAMEOS are all over the internet...ebay closed, RL, antique shows, antique dealers...is it carved shell with a roman long nose..carved with the shell imperfections as part of the design, period of time of subject, gold frame, long stem, gold filled? & there are many other things to look into...I would put these aside 1st...then the resin..(no light goes thru most likely a plastic)..period 1950's...gold plated those I would put aside...1950's has a pony tail, not gold,...1930's has the subject looking like that period too..maybe a flower on her shoulder..hair up..check for silver....DO YOUR RESEARCH...if you want to sell then you sell with a profit in mind or you can give away things....your call...hope this just is just a start for you to look into what you have...Loveoldstuff-Lil
